LHA started as a dream among a few local families. We opened our doors in Kickapoo in 2003 and 5 years later outgrew the space. Beginning in 2009 we shared space with the Midwest Food Bank on the north side of Peoria. Now our permanent location on Willow Knolls affords us plenty of space to grow and let our light shine!
We meet Monday through Thursday, 8:30 to 3:00, and Friday, 8:30 to noon. Our school days open with the Pledge of Allegiance and a Daily Devotional. Students are then dismissed to their respective classes but rejoin for lunch and occasionally other activities. Specials such as music and PE are often done as a community. We find the interaction of all ages is another huge benefit to growing well rounded future citizens.
Not all learning takes place at a desk. We believe that the best education integrates application into the experience. Whether it be through field trips, volunteerism or community service, our students develop a healthy balance of learning and applying. And yes, we have special celebrations, too!
Light House Academy is committed to providing a solid education in a wholesome environment. We welcome the opportunity to share our story with you.
We blend well respected, professional curriculum with many teacher created materials. Primary textbook resources include Abeka and Bob Jones Press, which are accented with in-room and online practice modules.
We hold ourselves to challenging standards and measure our progress with well respected assessment tools. Three assessment probes are administered during the year, to monitor ongoing progress toward our academic goals. Near the end of the year, we use an Iowa-based standards assessment to provide an annual benchmark of growth. All assessments are reviewed against national standards to confirm adequate progress is being made.
Our students are challenged through many venues. Traditionally, the classroom is the center of learning, but we often venture to other places to expand the opportunities. The students also have chances to donate services back to the community.
Behind every successful organization is someone special. Light House is blessed to have Mrs. Unsicker oversee day to day operations and help our community of families keep connected.
We are pleased that in addition to teaching one class to the middle schoolers, he has accepted a position as LHA ambassador, carrying our vision to the community.
Our middle school, grades five through eight, are taught by Ms. Alexander. They are challenged to grow in many ways under her watchful eye.
Mrs. Meister brings a wealth of teaching experience to our team. She oversees grades three and four.
Our third and fourth grade students are blessed to have a second teacher, Ms. Enlow, to share their week with. She has a love for music and teaching.
The first years of school are the most exciting, and can be the most challenging. Mrs. Chenoweth nurtures our kindergarten through second grade students by getting the best out of them while creating an exciting learning environment.
With great creativity, charm, and expertise in meeting students' needs, Mrs. Ramseyer assists kindergartners through 2nd graders this school year!
We believe the Bible to be God's inerrant Word, that Jesus Christ was his Son, and that the Holy Spirit provides daily guidance. We ask inquiring families to share their testimony of faith, too. While we do not teach religion as a class, God's Word is woven into everything we do. With our diverse family backgrounds, we feel it is best that specific church doctrines are taught at home and supported by the family.
Our focus is "Reflecting Christ and Enriching Minds." Every day we use Biblical principles to plan our lessons, guide our behaviors and create our Worldview. We select curriculum and textbooks written from a Christian perspective, and create activities that help students practice what they learn.
As a small, private school, we welcome parents and pre-qualified volunteers to help with school operations. Whether it be on a daily, weekly, monthly or ad hoc basis, there is something everyone can contribute toward enriching their student's education.
Light House assembles several programs each year, particularly at Christmastime and during the Spring Arts in Education concerts on the Courthouse Plaza. Additionally, we also assemble large fundraisers to help offset some of our operating budget. As a rule, we do not ask families to individually fundraise.
Light House students come from very diverse backgrounds, which helps build their social character. We adhere to wholesome policies on dress code, behavior, attendance and respect.
Parent's often have more questions than can be answered through our published information. We invite you to contact us directly, by email or phone, to arrange a visit or meeting time.
(From a Christian family who hoped their children could bring some light to a public school classroom, but...)
"After years of searching and praying for God to provide our children a balance of good academic standards with positive social-emotional learning . . . we felt defeated.
[We then discovered a] small private school connecting with Christian families to provide an education which combines academic excellence with biblical values to help a child's faith grow, mind expand and life be enriched."
"We are now able to bring our children to school know that the words they hear, the lessons they are taught, and the environment they spend their hours are safe! The teacher prays over my children! We are encouraged to be present and active at school and our children's education. Our children are calmer, enjoy going to school, and are more involved in their education than we have ever seen them."
